Middlebury edges PSU Women’s Volleyball

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Middlebury College spoiled Plymouth State University's Senior Night at Foley Gymnasium, pulling out a dramatic 3-2 victory in a non-conference women's volleyball match Wednesday evening.

Plymouth State battled from behind several times to tie the match. Middlebury won the first and third games, 33-31 and 31-29, and PSU answered with wins in the second and fourth games, 30-28 and 30-21. Middlebury led 11-7 and 13-9 in the fifth and decisive game, only to see PSU came back to tie it at 13-13, but the visitors prevailed in the end, 15-13.

Senior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) led the host Panthers with a season-high 27 kills and 30 digs, and classmate Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 15 kills and a season-best 35 digs. Sophomore Kirsten Willoughby (Plymouth, N.H.) chipped in with a season-high 13 kills. Senior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) finished with a season-high 51 assists.

Sophomore Lexie Fisher (San Francisco, Cal.) led Middlebury with 16 kills, while senior Jackie Edwards (Oakland, Cal.) and freshman Lindsay Patterson (Aspen, Col.) added 14 kills apiece. Junior Amy Heath (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) chipped in with 12 kills. Senior libero Jamie Wong (San Francisco, Cal) recorded 38 digs, and junior Lacee Patterson (Aspen, Col.) had 67 assists and 25 digs.

PSU, 17-12, returns to action this Saturday in Willimantic, Conn., at a pivotal Little East Conference round-robin, hosted by Eastern Connecticut. The Panthers can capture the LEC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament with victories over Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.) and Eastern Conn. (3:30 p.m.). Middlebury is now 10-7.
