Little East co-champions PSU Field Hockey and Volleyball teams set for LEC semifinals
PLYMOUTH, N.H. -The stage is now set and the teams determined for this weekend's Little East Conference field hockey and volleyball championships, which will be held at Plymouth State University and Eastern Connecticut State University, respectively.
The two Panther teams, which both captured a share of the LEC regular season title this fall, will compete in semifinal contests Friday afternoon. The field hockey team is seeking its fourth LEC Tournament title, having won three straight from 2000-02, and the volleyball squad is aiming to repeat after winning its first conference championship last season.
PSU's field hockey team, 12-4 overall under head coach Bonnie Lord, earned the top seed in this week's tournament after posting a 9-2 conference mark during the season. The Panthers shared the LEC title with Keene State, but received the top seed based on a 5-1 win over the Owls on Sept. 28. PSU enjoyed a first-round bye on Tuesday and the right to host the LEC semifinals and championship game this Friday and Saturday at Arold Field.
The Panthers will meet fourth-seeded Westfield State in the first semifinal Friday at 12:00 p.m., followed by the second game at 2:30 p.m. between second-seeded Keene State and sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth. WSC advanced with a 3-1 triumph over #5-seed Framingham State on Tuesday; KSC moved on with a 2-0 decision over #7 Southern Maine; and UMD pulled the first-round upset over #3 Fitchburg State, 2-0. The championship game is set for 12:00 p.m. Saturday at Arold Field, with the winner receiving the LEC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Westfield State defeated Plymouth State in the regular season, 5-1, at Westfield.
PSU's volleyball team, 22-15 overall under head coach Moira Long, earned the second seed in this week's tournament after posting a 6-1 conference mark during the season. The Panthers shared the LEC title with Eastern Conn., but the Warriors received the top seed based on a 3-1 win over the Panthers on Oct. 22. PSU, which has shared the regular season title the past two seasons, enjoyed a first-round bye on Tuesday.
The Panthers will meet third-seeded Keene State in the first semifinal Friday at 4:00 p.m. at ECSU, followed by the second match at 6:30 p.m. between Eastern Conn. and fourth-seeded Rhode Island College. KSC advanced with a 3-0 triumph over #6-seed Western Connecticut on Tuesday, and RIC moved on with a 3-0 decision over #5 UMass Dartmouth. The championship match is slated for 12:00 p.m. Saturday, with the winner receiving the LEC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
