PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team got its season off to a good start Friday night, winning its first two matches in the annual Cobblestone Inn Invitational Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.
PSU defeated Newbury College, 3-1 (30-12, 25-30, 30-13, 30-27) in the opening match, and came back with a 3-0 sweep (32-30, 30-20, 30-24) over Lasell Colllege n the second match. PSU is now 2-0 on the season with two more matches slated for Saturday.
There are seven schools competing in the tournament, with each team playing four matches in the two days. The team with the best record in the tourney will be declared the champion.
The Panthers have a young team this season, including no seniors, and that was evident on Friday. Freshman Kathy Frankowski (Unionville, Conn.) led the team in kills in both matches, recording 13 against Newbury and 16 against Lasell. Freshman Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) registered nine kills in the first match and 12 in the second, and freshman setter Brianna Kleckner (Terryville, Conn.) had a solid first outing, combining for 66 assists, 22 digs and eight service aces in the two matches. Sophomore Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) led the back row with 40 digs on the evening.
The competition resumes Saturday with matches at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. PSU's first encounter is against Mount Ida College at 11 a.m.
