PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team captured the season-opening Cobblestone Inn Invitational Tournament Saturday at Foley Gymnasium, finishing the tournament with a 4-0 record.
Bates College also finished with a 4-0 record, but PSU won the tiebreaker (games lost) and captured the title.
The Panthers, who defeated Newbury College (3-1) and Lasell College (3-0) Friday night, came back with a 3-0 victory (30-24, 30-24, 30-27) over Mount Ida College in Saturday's first match, and completed the perfect tournament with a 3-1 triumph (26-30, 30-27, 30-22, 30-21) over Western New England College.
PSU sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) turned in another strong performance as was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She recorded 16 digs in the win over Mount Ida and 22 digs in the triumph over WNEC to finish the tournament with 78 total digs.
Freshman setter Brianna Kleckner (Terryville, Conn.) continued her strong play and joined Spears on the All-Tournament Team. She collected 68 assists in the two matches while also contributing five aces and 11 digs.
The Panther offense was again led by freshmen, as Kathy Frankowski (Unionville, Conn.) recorded a team-high 10 kills in the win over Mount Ida and 11 kills in the victory over WNEC, and Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) registered nine kills in both of Saturday's matches.
PSU, off to a 4-0 start to the season, has another home match Tuesday against Colby-Sawyer (6:00 p.m.)
