PSU Womens Volleyball drops two at Little East Round Robin
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team battled for more than five hours Saturday afternoon and evening, but ended up on the short end of two key matches at a Little East Conference Round Robin at Rhode Island College.
All three matches on the day went to five games, including both that involved Plymouth State. Eastern Connecticut outlasted RIC in the first match of the day, 17-15 in the fifth game. Eastern came right back to face the Panthers, and pulled out a 30-18, 30-18, 28-30, 23-30, 15-10 victory in the middle contest, and RIC came back and defeated PSU in the final match, 24-30, 30-18, 30-27, 26-30, 15-8.
ECSU is now 7-4 overall and 2-0 in LEC play, while RIC is 6-5 and 1-1 and PSU is 5-2 and 0-2.
The round robin included three of the top teams in the LEC. PSU and ECSU were co-champions of last year's regular season, with Eastern winning the conference tournament, and PSU, ECSU, RIC and Western Connecticut all shared the 2004 regular season title, with Plymouth State defeating Eastern Conn. for the conference tournament championship.
Plymouth State battled from two games down to pull even with Eastern before falling in the fifth game, 15-10. Sophomore Michaela Del Rosso (East Providence, R.I.) had nine kills and freshmen Kathy Frankowski (Unionville, Conn.) and Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) added eight kills each, while freshman setter Brianna Kleckner (Terryville, Conn.) handed out 35 assists. Sophomore libero Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) was credited with 24 digs.
PSU won the first and fourth games against RIC, but again faltered in the fifth game, 15-8. Del Rosso led the Panthers with 13 kills, while Spears had 20 digs.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday with a match at Endicott (7:00 p.m.)
