PSU Volleyball sweeps UMD in first round of Little East Tournament
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) registered 16 kills Tuesday evening to lead third-seeded Plymouth State University to a 3-0 win over sixth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the first round of the Little East Conference Women's Volleyball Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers, 19-12 overall, advance to the semifinals this Friday at top-seeded and regular season champion Eastern Connecticut State University. PSU will meet second-seeded Rhode Island College in the first semifinal at 4:00 p.m. RIC, 19-12 overall, had a first-round bye on Tuesday. UMD completes its season at 11-14.
PSU, which improved to 11-0 at home this season, came from behind to pull out the first game against the Corsairs. UMD led 29-26 before the Panthers rallied to win, 32-30. Plymouth State used the momentum to win the second game easily, 30-9, and put the match away with a 30-27 decision in game three.
Badeau had a .481 hitting percentage, with 16 kills and only three errors, while adding a team-high three service aces. Sophomore Michaela Del Rosso (East Providence, R.I.) chipped in with eight kills and classmate Wendy Dziedzic (Nashua, N.H.) added six. Sophomores Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) and Regan Bowlen (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the defense with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Sophomore Hilary Teichert (Pocasset, Mass.) and junior Nazareth Cardoso (Brockton, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 10 kills apiece, while sophomore Aly Zagame (Greenfield, Mass.) made 10 digs.
PSU will be out to even the season series against RIC on Friday. The Anchorwomen handed the Panthers a 3-2 defeat back on Sept. 16, winning 15-8 in the fifth game.
