Colby-Sawyer outlasts PSU Womens Volleyball
NEW LONDON, N.H. - Colby-Sawyer College ran its winning streak to six matches Tuesday evening with a dramatic five-game victory over Plymouth State University in a battle of unbeaten women's volleyball teams.
The Chargers found themselves down early in game one, as the Panthers scored the first six points of the game. The Chargers chipped away to finally tie the score at 29 all, before fighting off two game points by the Panthers to defeat PSU 33-31.
Game two saw the Chargers jump to an early 14-4 lead before Plymouth State rattled of 13 straight points to take the lead 17-14. The Chargers tied the game at 21, and scored the last nine points to win game two, 30-21.
The third game was a back-and-fourth battle to 19, before the Panthers pulled away to win 30-22.
In game four, the Chargers again saw their early lead evaporate, 6-1, as the Panthers came back once again, scoring seven of the last 10 points to take tie the match at two games each, 30-25.
In the fifth and final game, the Chargers fell behind early, but battled back from a five point deficit to tie the game at 13 before freshman Mae Joseph (Newton, Mass.) served the last three points for the Chargers, including a match-winning ace, defeating Plymouth State 15-13 in game five.
For the Chargers, Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) led the way with a season-high 18 kills while sophomore Genny Moore (Centerville, Mass.) added a season-high 55 assists. For Plymouth State, junior outside hitter Regan Bowlen (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the way with 16 kills while Wendy Dziedzic (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in 15 kills of her own in the loss.
Colby-Sawyer (6-0) returns to action Thursday, Sept. 13, at Rivier (7 p.m.) Plymouth State (4-1) travels to Eastern Connecticut for a Little East Conference weekend on Saturday, Sept. 15.
