Panthers fall to host JWU and WestConn
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was another strong day for senior Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) but the Plymouth State University women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday in the annual Johnson & Wales Fall Classic at the Harborside RAC.
The Panthers dropped Saturday's first match in four sets to host Johnson & Wales (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16). PSU then played a consolation round match against Western Connecticut State University, falling in four sets (25-14, 13-25, 25-18, 25-16). Plymouth State had defeated WestConn on Friday evening in a five-set match.
MIT knocked off JWU in the championship match to capture the tournament title, finishing the weekend with a 3-1 record. JWU wound up with a 2-2 record for a second-place finish while WestConn was also 2-2 and PSU was 1-3. MIT is now 17-3 overall while JWU is 7-12, WestConn is 10-8 and PSU is 7-11.
Stoodley was named to the All-Tournament Team after two more strong performances for PSU. She finished with team-highs of 16 kills and 27 digs in the loss to JWU, and added 13 kills and 25 digs against WestConn. Stoodley averaged 3.88 kills and 4.94 digs per set in the four matches on the weekend.
Other top performances for the Panthers against JWU included 20 digs from junior Cassie Pelton (Brookline, N.H.), 10 digs from junior Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) and 29 assists by freshman setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.). Highlights from the WestConn match included 16 digs by Pelton and 27 assists from Perrotta.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. match at rival Keene State College.
