Panthers down Smith in five and Mount Holyoke in three
KEENE, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team recorded a pair of victories Saturday in the Little East Conference-New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (LEC-NEWMAC) Challenge, hosted by Keene State College.
The Panthers were extended to five sets in the opener before defeating Smith College, 3-2, including a 15-12 decision in the fifth set. PSU won the first and third sets (25-19 and 25-16), and Smith answered by taking the second and fourth sets (25-17 and 25-20). Plymouth State used the momentum from the fifth set win to take out Mount Holyoke in three sets, 25-15, 25-19, and 25-15.
Plymouth State has now won three in a row to improve to 11-14 overall. Smith ends the day with a 6-13 record while Mount Holyoke is 3-14.
It was another strong day for PSU senior Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.). She recorded team-highs of 21 kills and 26 digs in the win over Smith, and led the way with 17 kills in the triumph over Mount Holyoke. Stoodley reached double figures in both kills and digs in a match for the 16th time this season.
Freshman Sam Clark (Coventry, R.I.) was also a big contributor in the win over Smith with 10 kills. Freshman Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) recorded 39 set assists, while junior Cassie Pelton (Brookline, N.H.) and freshman Kaitlyn Coon (Poestenkill, N.Y.) collected 19 and 13 digs, respectively.
Junior Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) chipped in with eight kills in the Mount Holyoke match, and Clark added seven. Perrotta and sophomore Hannah Anderson (Exeter, R.I.) split the setting duties, and Pelton led the defense with 14 digs.
PSU returns to action Wednesday with a trip to Vermont to take on Middlebury College.
