PSU Volleyball finishes in third place at Plattsburgh Inv.
Panthers down Cazenovia and Elms; Coon named All-Tournament
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team recorded a pair of victories on Saturday to wind up in third place at Plattsburgh State's Best Western/Ground Round Cardinal Classic, defeating Cazenovia College in pool play and Elms College in the third place match.
PSU winds up the tournament with a 3-1 record, including Saturday's 3-1 win over Cazenovia (22-25, 25-9, 25-18. 25-20) and 3-0 sweep of Elms (25-23, 25-12, 25-8). The Panthers even their season record at 4-4, while Cazenovia is 2-11 and Elms is 1-10.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Coon (Poestenkill, N.Y.) was Plymouth State's representative on the All-Tournament Team. Coon posted 16 kills and 27 digs in the tourney, including six kills and 27 digs in the victory over Cazenovia.
Senior Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) and freshman Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) both reached double figures in kills against Cazenovia, Tedeschi with 14 and Taffe with 11. Sophomore Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) set up the offense and wound up with 45 assists, and three players reached double digits in digs – Coon, senior Cassie Pelton (Brookline, N.H.) and freshman Katie Sylvia (Lee, N.H.).
Tedeschi pounded out eight kills with a .471 attack percentage in the win over Elms, while three other Panthers made seven kills each – Perrotta, Taffe and junior Jana Nieman (Fair Lawn, N.J.). Pelton collected a team-high 12 digs and Perotta contributed eight digs and 28 assists.
The Panthers play their first home matches of the season next Saturday when they host Rhode Island College and Worcester State University at Foley Gymnasium. The RIC tilt is also the Little East Conference season debut.
