PSU Women’s Volleyball splits pair at Plattsburgh Inv.
Panthers falls to hosts, defeat Norwich
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team split a pair of three-set matches Friday evening at Plattsburgh State's Best Western/Ground Round Cardinal Classic, falling to the host Cardinals and defeating Norwich University.
The Panthers started the evening with a 25-15, 25-18, 27-25 setback to Plattsburgh, but rebounded with a 25-11, 25-16, 25-19 decision over Norwich. PSU heads into the Saturday portion of the tournament with a 2-4 season record, while Plattsburgh is 3-7 and Norwich is 1-7.
After dropping the first two sets against Plattsburgh, the Panthers put up a tough battle in the third set. Down 14-10, PSU went on an 11-3 surge to take a 21-17 lead. The Panthers were a point from winning the set, up 24-22, but the Cardinals rallied for the 27-25 decision to close out the match.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Coon (Poestenkill, N.Y.) led the Panthers with eight kills, while senior Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) recorded five kills and two service aces. Sophomore setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) finished with 24 assists, and senior Cassie Pelton (Brookline, N.H.) posted a season-high 23 digs.
Tedeschi and freshman Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) each smashed five kills to lead the Panthers over Norwich. Pelton added 10 more digs onto her evening's total while freshman Katie Sylvia (Lee, N.H.) contributed eight digs. PSU made 16 blocks in the match, including four each from Wojtas and classmate Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.)
The Panthers will play two more matches at the Plattsburgh Tournament on Saturday, facing Cazenovia College at 11:00 a.m., and an opponent to be determined at 1:30 p.m.
