PSU Women’s Volleyball extends win streak to eight

Panthers down UMass Dartmouth and Husson

            NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a Little East Conference clash and following with a non-conference triumph over Husson.

            The Panthers extended their winning streak to eight matches in the process, improving to 9-4 overall this season.  PSU is also 2-0 in the LEC after the 25-19, 25-23, 25-13 win over UMD in the first match.  The Panthers went on to defeat Husson, 15-9, 15-10, 15-13.  Husson is now 7-11 and UMD is 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.

            PSU used a strong team effort in the two wins.  Junior Jana Nieman (Fair Lawn, N.J.) led the way against UMD, smashing 11 kills with .333 attack percentage, while senior Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) added nine kills with a .389 attack pct., and freshman Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) contributed eight kills and a .368 attack pct.  Sophomore setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) distributed the ball to the tune of 33 assists.

            Freshman Katie Sylvia (Lee, N.H.) and senior Cassie Pelton (Brookline, N.H.) led the Panther defense with 20 and 16 digs, respectively.

            Sylvia was the top hitter in the win over Husson, recording nine kills (with .421 attack percentage) and a PSU season-high nine service aces. Freshman Gretta Buckley (Stamford, Conn.) took advantage of her playing time, finishing with five kills and a .364 attack pct.

            PSU will be back in action Tuesday with a visit to Colby-Sawyer College for a non-conference match (7:00 p.m.)
