Panthers fall to SUNY Canton and Babson
BEVERLY, Mass. – It was another tough day on the court for the Plymouth State University women's volleyball team Saturday as the Panthers suffered a pair of 3-1 losses at the Endicott College Invitational to SUNY Canton and Babson College.
The Panthers dropped the first set to Canton, 25-23, and the next two sets went to overtime as PSU won the second set, 26-24, and Canton took the third, 29-27. The Kangaroos went on to claim the match with a 25-16 decision in the fourth set.
PSU struggled in the opening set against Babson, falling 25-11, but the Panthers rebounded with a 25-20 victory in the second set. Babson proved too strong and closed out the Panthers with 25-20 and 25-8 verdicts in the third and fourth sets.
Junior setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) posted a double-double with 13 digs and 29 assists against Canton, and added six digs and 23 assists vs. Babson to earn PSU's selection to the All-Tournament Team.
Senior Jana Nieman (Fair Lawn, N.J.) led the Panthers in the match against Canton, posting 10 kills and two service aces. Sophomore Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) recorded eight kills and classmates Katie Sylvia (Lee, N.H./Oyster River), Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) and Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) chipped in with six winners apiece. Freshman Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) made a team-high 18 digs.
Taffe led the Panthers against Babson with seven kills and five blocks while Wojtas and Nieman made six kills each.
PSU, 0-4, will be looking for its first win Tuesday in the home opener at Foley Gym against Framingham State University (6:00 p.m.)
