Nieman, Wojtas top Panthers with 10 kills each
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, R.I.) recorded 10 kills while freshman Logan Fontes (East Providence, R.I.) narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine kills and nine digs, as the Rhode Island College women's volleyball squad defeated Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon, 3-1, in Little East Conference action played at The Murray Center.
The win marks the first regular season Little East victory for the Anchorwomen since October 27, 2012, when they defeated Plymouth State, 3-1, at the Murray Center.
The first set saw Fontes tally six kills on eight attempts to lead the Anchorwomen to a 25-16 victory over Plymouth State (1-5, 0-1 LEC). The second set was a back and forth battle that saw the Anchorwomen emerge victorious with a 25-23 win. The Panthers cut the lead in half when they took the third set, 25-18. After falling behind early in the fourth set, the Anchorwomen clawed back to take the set 25-20, giving Head Coach Leo Bush his first collegiate victory.
RIC was led by Fontes, with her nine kills and nine assists, Malboeuf's 10 kills and freshman Abigayl White (Coventry, R.I.) with a team high 35 assists. Junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, R.I.) finished with a team-high three service aces.
The Panthers were led by junior setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) with a team high 31 assists and six digs. Senior Jana Nieman (Fair Lawn, NJ) and sophomore Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) led the attack for the Panthers with 10 kills each. Wojtas also added six block assists.
PSU returns home to host Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Tuesday at Foley Gymnasium (7:00 p.m.). Rhode Island College will play at Lasell on Tuesday AT 7 p.m.
