Panthers fall to Penn State-Behrend and host Kean
UNION, N.J. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of four-set matches Friday evening, falling to Penn State-Behrend and Kean University in the five-team Kean Invitational at Harwood Arena.
The Panthers fell behind Penn State-Behrend after dropping the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-16. PSU fought back with a 26-24 victory in the third set, but the Lions finished off the win with a 25-17 verdict in the fourth set. Plymouth State took an early lead over Kean with a 25-23 victory in the opening set, but the hosts proved too much for the Panthers, taking three straight sets to close out the win, 25-13, 25-23, 25-14.
PSU completes the evening with a 7-10 overall record, while Penn State-Behrend is 15-7 and Kean is 10-10.
Sophomore Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) was the top hitter for PSU against Penn State-Behrend, smashing seven kills, while sophomore Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) added five winners. Freshman libero Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) registered 15 digs and sophomore Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H.) added nine. Junior Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) and freshman Megan Bailey (Canterbury, N.H.) shared setting duties, combining for 30 assists.
Senior Jana Nieman (Fair Lawn, N.J.) pounded 12 kills and a .250 attack percentage to lead the Panthers against Kean. Nieman also made three blocks, while Wojtas added seven kills and two blocks. Peruch and sophomore Katie Sylvia (Lee, N.H.) both reached double figures in digs, Peruch with 15 and Sylvia with 10, and Perrotta contributed 29 set assists and seven digs.
The tournament concludes Saturday with two matches for each school. PSU will take on the College of New Rochelle (N.Y.) at 10:00 a.m. and Messiah College (Pa.) at 12 noon.
