Panthers drop LEC match to Warriors, defeat WPI
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium, falling to host Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-0, in a Little East Conference match before coming back with a 3-0 victory over WPI in a non-conference encounter.
The Warriors posted set wins of 25-17, 25-14, and 25-16 to cruise past the Panthers, improving to 13-13 overall. Eastern is now in third place in the LEC at 4-2 in conference play while PSU fell to a tie for fifth at 2-3 in the LEC. Plymouth State came back with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 verdict over WPI as the Panthers improved to 12-16 overall and WPI slipped to 10-17.
Sophomore Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) was the top hitter for PSU against Eastern Conn., posting six kills and a .278 attack percentage. Senior Jana Nieman (Fair Lawn, N.J.) added four kills and two blocks, and freshman Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) made nine digs.
Sophomore Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) came alive for PSU in the WPI match, pounding nine kills with a .533 attack percentage. Nieman added six winners and sophomore Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) chipped in with four kills.
PSU returns home for the Senior night match on Tuesday as the Panthers host the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match at Foley Gym (6:00 p.m.)
