Panthers down SUNY Poly but fall to host Canton
CANTON, N.Y. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team wrapped up the weekend with a 3-1 record after splitting a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Canton Invitational.
The Panthers improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-1 triumph (25-21, 15-25, 25-6, 25-20) over SUNY Poly in the first match of the day, but suffered their first defeat of the year in the second match with a 3-0 loss (25-16, 25-16, 25-14) to host SUNY Canton.
Canton finished the tournament with a 4-0 mark (5-0 on the season), while SUNY Poly is now 1-2 and PSU 3-1.
Sophomore Claire Sporer (Medford, Ore.) had a strong match for PSU against SUNY Poly, posting a team-high nine kills, while juniors Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) and Dani Tabor (Olympia, Wash.) added six kills apiece. Taffe and Tabor were also strong at the net, combining for 16 blocks. Sophomore libero Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) contributed 14 digs, and senior setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) collected 28 assists.
Canton proved too strong for the Panthers in the final match. Tabor led the team with five kills while freshman Alisha Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) and junior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) added four apiece. Peruch came back with 14 digs, and Perrotta contributed 19 assists and 11 digs.
PSU is back on the court Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match at Framingham State.
