Panthers down Plattsburgh and Cazenovia at SUNY Canton Tourney
CANTON, N.Y. – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball season got off to a good start Friday evening as the Panthers won their first two matches at the SUNY Canton Invitational.
The Panthers started the evening with a straight-set victory over SUNY Plattsburgh (25-17, 25-15, 25-18), and followed that with a 3-1 triumph over Cazenovia College (25-16, 25-11,19-25, 25-12). PSU takes a 2-0 mark into Saturday's action, while Plattsburgh is now 1-2 and Cazenovia is 1-3.
Sophomore Claire Sporer (Medford, Ore.) made an outstanding debut in a Panther uniform in the Plattsburgh match, posting a team-high 15 kills with a .303 attack percentage. Junior Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) added six kills with a .385 attack percentage and junior Dani Tabor (Olympia, Wash.) chipped in with five kills and a .400 percentage. Sophomore libero Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) finished with 17 digs and junior Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) was a part of three blocks. Senior setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) contributed 27 assists along with four kills and three service aces.
The Panthers used a balanced attack in the win over Cazenovia, with Tabor and junior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) and Reegan McKenney (Dover, N.H.) smashing seven kills each and Sporer and Perrotta adding five winners apiece. McKenney led the way with 10 digs while Wojtas and Tabor made three blocks each.
The tournament continues Saturday with two more matches for all teams; PSU meets SUNY Poly at 12 noon and the host SUNY Canton Kangaroos at 2:00 p.m.
