Sporer leads Panthers to non-conference wins
BOSTON – The Plymouth State University volleyball team returned to winning form Saturday afternoon, sweeping a tri-match at Suffolk University; the Panthers took down the host Rams in three sets in the first match, and did the same to Salem State University in the second match.
PSU defeated Suffolk by scores of 25-15, 25-22, and 25-14, and downed Salem State by the count of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-12. The Panthers are now 15-5 this season, while Suffolk drops to 4-14 and Salem State is 3-13.
Sophomore Claire Sporer (Medford, Ore.) had an outstanding day to lead the Panthers with 23 kills and a .408 hitting percentage. She had a double-double in the opener against Suffolk with 12 kills and 10 digs while hitting at a .478 clip, and she came back with 11 kills and a .346 attack percentage in the win over Salem State.
Junior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) also smashed eight kills in the victory against Suffolk, and senior Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) contributed 27 assists and four service aces. Junior Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) and sophomore Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Az.) led the defense, Taffe with six blocks at the net and Peruch with 13 digs.
Junior Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) had a strong match against Salem State with nine kills and three service aces, finishing with a .400 attack percentage, and freshman Alisha Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) chipped in with six kills. Peruch was strong with four service aces and 17 digs, and sophomore setter Megan Bailey (Canterbury, N.H.) had a team-high 14 assists.
The Panthers return home and will host rival Keene State College Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in a key Little East Conference match. It is also Dig Pink Night at Foley Gym as the teams recognize the fight against breast cancer.
