Taffe, Sporer, Flanagan with strong days for Panthers
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Plymouth State University volleyball team posted a pair of 3-0 sweeps Saturday at Smith College, taking down the host Pioneers as well as Mount Holyoke College in non-conference matches.
PSU won the opener over Smith by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-22, and came back with a victory over Mount Holyoke, 25-20, 25-13, and 25-12. The Panthers are now 17-6 on the season while Smith is now 4-17 and Holyoke is 6-12.
Junior Mikki Taffe (Sandown, N.H.) led the Panthers in the win over Smith, posting nine kills with a .421 attack percentage, while freshman Alisha Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) chipped in with six winners. Senior Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) ran the offense and recorded 31 assists and sophomore Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Az.) made a team-high three service aces and 19 digs. Junior Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) also contributed a team-best three blocks and four kills without an attack error.
Sophomore Claire Sporer (Medford, Ore.) returned to form against Mount Holyoke, recording 14 kills with a .385 attack percentage. Flanagan also reached double digits in kills with 10 winners and a .368 hitting percentage. Perrotta added 33 more assists, and the Panthers recorded 14 service aces, led by sophomore Megan Bailey (Canterbury, N.H.) with four.
The Panthers are back in action next Saturday with a tri-match at UMass Dartmouth, facing the LEC foe Corsairs at 12 noon and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m.
