Kilmer took over the Panthers just prior to pre-season in 2011 and never looked back. He guided the team to a share of the LEC regular season championship (which included a dramatic upset-victory over three-time defending champion UMass Boston) and the top seed for the LEC Tournament for the first time in program history. His team earned berths in the championship match of both the LEC and ECAC New England Tournaments and recorded a final record of 25-11. He was rewarded with LEC Coach of the Year honors.

He led his squad back to the championship game in 2016 in the second of back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Panthers. His teams have qualified for the LEC Tournament every year. Kilmer sports a 112-82 record in six years at PSU.

A native of Essex Jct., Vt., and a 1999 graduate of Plymouth State, Kilmer spent six years at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, including three as head coach (2008-10). He left SMC as the second winningest coach in program history.

Kilmer began his coaching career as a student assistant at Plymouth State under head coach John Garneau, when women’s volleyball premiered as a varsity sport in 1996. Kilmer was also a four-year member of the men’s club volleyball team, serving as captain and club president from 1997-99, and was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 1999. He served as junior high head coach at Moultonborough Academy and junior varsity coach and varsity assistant at Plymouth Regional High School, and was a head coach for the Lakes Region Junior Olympic Club, based in Meredith, N.H., from 1998-06.

After serving three years as an assistant coach at Saint Michael’s, Kilmer was promoted to head coach prior to the 2008 season. He led the team to a 12-14 record in his first season, equaling the program-high for wins in a year since 1995. Kilmer had a three-year mark of 32-49 to rank second on the SMC Volleyball all-time coaching list for winning percentage and fourth in victories.

Kilmer has been an active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) since 2008, most recently serving on its Division III Coaches Poll Committee. He was also a member of the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Poll Committee from 2013-15.

Coach Kilmer and his wife, Anna, have two boys ages 6 and 4.
