Gaudette and Carten lead Panther runners
BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Plymouth State University cross country teams fared well in their varsity debuts on Saturday with solid performances at the University of New England Invitational at Rotary Park.
The Panther men finished in eighth place out of 15 schools, while the Panther women came in 10th out of 15. The men's squad finished just behind Lasell College and ahead of Endicott College, while the women's squad came in after Massachusetts Maritime Academy but before Nichols College. Lyndon State College captured the men's race while Salve Regina University finished atop the women's team standings; host UNE was runner-up in both races.
Junior Evan Gaudette (Nashua, N.H./North) turned in a solid performance for the Panthers, finishing the 4.6 mile course in 28 minutes, 43 seconds, crossing the finish line in 18th place among the 123 runners. Freshman Shawn Miller (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane) was about a minute behind (29:40), placing 40th, while freshman Sam Webber (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) took 45th in a time of 29:51. Also scoring for PSU were sophomore Tim Lindberg (Jericho, Vt.) and junior Brent Whitney (Merrimack, N.H.)
Freshman Jen Carten (Etters, Pa.) ran an outstanding race for the Panther women, placing 33rd among 137 runners and posting a personal-best time (21:48) in the three-mile race by more than a minute. Senior Kara Comiskey (Dover, Mass.) was the next Panther finisher in 87th place, followed by junior Meagan Celley (Peabody, Mass.), sophomore Cassidy Spencer (St. Francis, Maine) and junior Shannon Egan (Candia, N.H.)
The Panther squads will compete again next Saturday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational.
