Martino, Carten top finishers for Panthers
KEENE, N.H. – The Plymouth State University cross country teams turned in some solid individual performances Saturday at the Keene State College Invitational, but it didn't show in the team results as both Panther men's and women's teams finished near the back of the pack.
The Panther men finished 10th out of 11 teams in the race, while the Panther women came in 12th out of 12 teams. Host Keene State won the men's team scoring, ahead of runner-up Brandeis University and third place University of Southern Maine, while Brandeis captured the women's team standings, ahead of runner-up Keene State and third place Wellesley College.
Junior Dave Martino (Laconia, N.H.) ran a strong race and was the first Panther male to cross the finish line. He finished the 8,000-meter race in a time of 29 minutes, 25 seconds. Junior Evan Gaudette (Nashua, N.H./North) was just 11 seconds behind, taking 43rd place overall. The next three Panther finishers were freshman Shawn Miller (Atkinson, N.H.) in 63rd place (30:57), freshman Sam Webber (Derry, N.H.) in 70th place (31:17), and sophomore Tim Lindberg (Jericho, Vt.) in 93rd place (34:34). There were 113 male runners who completed the race.
The top finisher for the PSU women was freshman Jen Carten (Etters, Pa.), who finished in 98th place among the 152 runners; she completed the 5,000 meter race in 23 minutes, 25 seconds. Senior Kara Comiskey (Dover, Mass.) was next to cross the finish line, placing 109th with a time of 23:52, followed by solid efforts from sophomores Krista Bouchard (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and Cassidy Spencer (St. Francis, Maine) and junior Shannon Egan (Candia, N.H./Manchester Central).
Chloe Boutelle of Saint Michael's College was the top women's runner, finishing the 5K in 18:44, while Keene State's Ryan Widzgowski topped the men's race, finishing the 8K in 26:36.
The Panther runners will be racing again next Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Westfield State Invitational.
