PSU Cross Country teams place ninth at UNE Invitational

Uhlman tops Panther women; Martino paces Panther men

            BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Plymouth State University men's and women's cross country teams both captured ninth place out of 17 teams Saturday at the University of New England Invitational at Rotary Park.

            Both Panther teams showed improvement over their first race of the season, both in terms of team scoring and individual times. Every runner on both Panther teams improved their times over last week's race at Saint Anselm.

            Host UNE won both the men's and women's team titles, ahead of runner-up Gordon College in the women's standings and in front of second-place Endicott in the men's scoring. PSU finished just ahead of Thomas College and just behind Curry College in the women's race, and just ahead of Lasell College and just behind Thomas College in the men's race.

            Senior David Martino (Laconia, N.H.) posted the top performance for the Panthers, coming in 21st place among the 143 male runners.  Martino covered the 8K course in 28 minutes, six seconds, more than two and a half minutes faster than last week. Sophomore Shawn Miller (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane) was the second Panther finisher in 47th overall (29:38), and junior Tim Lindberg (Jericho, Vt.) was the third PSU runner to cross the line in 61st in 30:46, dropping more than three minutes off his time from a week ago. Sophomore Nat Smyth (Plymouth, N.H.) also dropped nearly six minutes off his time (31:13) and finished 63rd, one place ahead of classmate Sam Webber (Derry, N.H.), who improved nearly two minutes and finished in 31:19.

            Sophomore Sarah Uhlman (Ashland, N.H./Plymouth Regional) was again the top finisher for PSU in the women's race, placing 29th overall among the 140 women runners; she covered the 5K course in 21 minutes, 30 seconds and dropped more than two minutes off her time from last week. Freshman Rileigh Goulette (Saint Albans, Vt.) was the next Panther finisher, coming in 42nd in a time of 22:55, dropping three and a half minutes off her time from last week. Sophomore Jen Carten (Etters, Pa.) came in 56th, running a 23:48 (a two-and-a-half minute drop); junior Krista Bouchard (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) was 60th in 24:02, more than a five minute drop; and junior Alyssa Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) was 65th in 25:00, a nine-minute drop in time.

            PSU will race again next Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
