Giguere, Dennis lead Panthers in season opener
BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Plymouth State University women's cross country team pulled out a seventh-place finish Saturday morning among 16 teams at the University of New England Invitational in the team's season debut.
The Panthers were led by freshmen Lora Giguere (Tolland, Conn.) and Haley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.), who placed 25th and 28th, respectively, among the 151 runners in the race. Giguere covered 5K course in 22 minutes, four seconds while Dennis finished in 22 minutes, 22 seconds.
Host UNE easily took the team title with a score of 18 points. Endicott College placed second with 81 points, with Gordon College (85), Worcester State (86) and Wheelock (150) rounding out the top five. The Panthers, who finished ninth in last year's race, were seventh this year with 185 points.
Sophomore Rileigh Goulette (St. Albans, Vt.) was the top Panther finisher among the returnees, placing 41st. A contingent of four PSU freshman came across the line in places 45-48, Ashley Bergeron (Berlin, N.H.), Courtney Allen (Lewiston, Maine), Sydney Wacht (Nauset, Mass.), and Jennifer Marcus (Eliot, Maine).
The Panthers compete again next Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
