Freshmen lead Panther runners
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's cross country team turned in a solid finish Saturday morning at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational, placing 29th among 40 schools in the annual race.
The 29th place marks a four-team improvement over last year, when the team took 33rd.
Freshmen Lora Giguere (Tolland, Conn.) and Haley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) led the Panthers, placing 144th and 165th, respectively, among the 315 runners in the race. Giguere covered 5K course in 21 minutes, seven seconds while Dennis finished in 21:29.
Sophomore Rileigh Goulette (St. Albans, Vt.) followed with a strong run for PSU, finishing 209th. Junior Sarah Uhlman (Ashland, Mass.) made her season debut after returning from an illness, placing 219th, and freshman Courtney Allen (Lewiston, Maine) was 226th.
"The women's team took a big step forward today," said PSU head coach John Ostler. "Getting Sarah back gave everyone a boost of confidence before the race. I'm very proud of the back end of our varsity team today. Our 5-10 pushed each other all race. They will be a tight pack all year."
The Panthers compete again on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Keene State College Invitational.
