Brunnette named Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top runner on the Plymouth State University men's cross country team was recognized for his outstanding season Wednesday with a major honor from the Little East Conference (LEC).
Freshman Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt./North Country Union) was tabbed LEC Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year for 2015. Brunnette, who was PSU's top runner in every race this season, was the LEC Rookie Runner of the Week three times and once was selected LEC Runner of the Week.
A 5'9" freshman, Brunnette finished second at the University of New England Invitational in his first collegiate race in September and never looked back. He set the school record in the 8K, running a 26:29 in October at the James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University. Brunnette was the top freshman finisher at the LEC Championships on Oct. 31, placing fifth overall with a time of 26:39.03 for the five-mile course, running at a 5:20-mile pace and helping PSU to its best finish at the LEC Championships in the three years since joining the conference.
Led by second-year head coach John Ostler, PSU had a strong season as a third-year varsity program. The Panthers moved up two spots over last year at the LEC Championships, and improved 17 places with a 29th-place finish at the NCAA New England Regional Championships last Saturday in Waterford, Conn.
