Panthers earn weekly recognition in men's cross country and field hockey

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University student-athletes received weekly recognition from the Little East Conference Monday, rewarding them for their performances in LEC post-season competition last week.

Sophomore Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt./North Country Union) was named LEC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, and freshmen Kate McPherson (Conway, N.H./Kennett) was selected LEC Field Hockey Rookie of the Week. Brunnette is a four-time recipient this season of the LEC Runner of the Week honor, while McPherson is a two-time selection.

Brunnette captured the Little East Conference individual championship last Saturday, outrunning a field of 59 runners in an 8k race in a time of 25 minutes, 12 seconds. Brunnette and teammate Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.) made up half of a four-person lead pack which quickly separated from the rest of the field and stayed tight for three miles. Brunnette used a gradual incline at the 4-mile mark to take his first lead of the race and slowly build a gap. The victory marked his second win of the year (Keene State Invite 10/1).

The Panther runners will take this coming weekend off and compete again at the NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Westfield State.

McPherson was a standout on both offense and defense for the Panthers last week. She anchored the PSU defense that allowed just one goal in two games, and scored game-winning goals in both outings, including an LEC playoff win. She led the Panther defense that allowed just five shots in a 1-0 non-conference overtime win over Saint Joseph's (which had won eight games in a row) and just four shots in a 2-1 LEC upset playoff win Saturday evening at Fitchburg State. She also scored the overtime game-winner in the win over Saint Joseph's and the game-winner in the 55th minute against Fitchburg State.

PSU, 11-5 overall and seeded #5 in the LEC Tournament, will visit top-seeded Keene State College on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6:00 p.m. for an LEC Semifinal, with the winner hosting the LEC Field Hockey Championship game on Saturday, Nov. 5.
