Brunnette becomes first Panther to earn All-Region honors
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt.) became the first Plymouth State University men's cross country runner to earn All-Region honors Saturday, placing 19th among 384 competitors at the NCAA Division III Regional qualifier at Stanley Park, hosted by Westfield State University.
Brunnette's finish helped the Panthers finish in 26th place among the 56 competing teams, the best finish since PSU restarted cross country four years ago and a three-place improvement over last season.
Brunnette, who completed the 8k course in 25 minutes, 15 seconds, put himself in contention to receive a berth in the NCAA Division III Championships next Saturday, Nov. 19, at Louisville, Ky. The NCAA field will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 13.

TOP FIVE TEAM SCORES:
MIT 110, Williams 110, Amherst 141, Middlebury 153, Tufts 159
PSU SCORE: 830 (26th place of 56 Teams)
* Also scoring for PSU were sophomore Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.), 82nd in 26:12; and three freshman -- Noah Byington (Hanscomb AFB, Mass.), 200th in 28:08; Jonathan Sawyer (Gloucester, Mass.), 258th in 29:04; and Trevor Campbell (Coventry, R.I.), 277th in 29:24.
* Five of PSU's seven runners posted faster times than the pre-regional race on the same course last month.
* "Sam began the race as far back as 75th place," said PSU head coach John Ostler. "His plan was to run an even race and pick up places as other runner tired from a fast start. He executed perfectly. If he qualifies (for the nationals), it will be thanks to a finishing kick that saw him move from 27th to 19th place in the final 200 meters."
