PSU Cross Country runners earn major LEC awards

Brunnette named Runner of the Year, Bowles tabbed Rookie of the Year

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top runners from the Plymouth State University men's and women's cross country teams were among those honored as the Little East Conference (LEC) released its major awards winners on Thursday.

Senior Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) was voted the LEC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year, while freshman Kim Bowles (Wonalancet, N.H.) was chosen as the LEC Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Year.

The honors hardly come as a shock, as Brunnette was selected Runner of the Week four times this fall. He becomes the first-ever three time Runner of the Year, after also claiming Rookie of the Year in 2015. The most decorated runner in PSU history, Brunnette captured a third-straight LEC title this fall, becoming just the second runner in league history to accomplish the three-peat. In four races this fall, the veteran grabbed three titles and a second place finish.

Bowles becomes the first PSU woman to collect a major LEC cross country award after bursting onto the scene. The five-time Rookie of the Week posted four top-15 performances, including the individual title at The Charger Open at Colby-Sawyer and a fifth place finish at the Purple Valley Classic hosted by Williams College. She finished seventh overall (and second among freshmen) at the Bowdoin Invitational on Oct. 13, and was the fastest freshman at the LEC Championships on Oct. 27, where she finished 13th overall. She was the Panthers' top female finisher in five of six races this year.

The duo are among the group of runners fifth-year head coach John Oster will bring to the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships at Bowdoin College on Saturday (Nov. 9). Brunnette captured the New England title a year ago.
