Brunnette to compete for a national title
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Following another standout season, the top runner for the Plymouth State University men's cross country team has earned a repeat shot at a national title.
Senior Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) will be competing on collegiate sports' grandest stage for the fifth time in his career this Saturday (Nov. 17), when he represents Plymouth State at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisc.
It is Brunnette's second straight appearance at the national meet. A year ago he earned All America honors after a 25th place finish, becoming the first Panthers' runner to earn the distinction.
He claimed a second straight New England Regional title on Saturday (Nov. 10) when he pulled ahead of a four-man cluster over the final 400 meters.
Brunnette is looking for his fourth consecutive All America recognition after also earning the distinction at last year's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"It's a significant accomplishment to qualify for nationals no matter how many times you've been previously," said head coach John Ostler. "In cross country, everything needs to go right on the right day, not to mention the New England region is among the most competitive of the eight regions in the country. I know I speak for Sam when I say that the satisfaction of qualifying was short lived. He expects to go to nationals and a lot of his goals for the year revolve around what he'll do out there in Wisconsin. It's great to go into that meet with the momentum of being a back to back regional champ."
The men's championship race begins at 1:15 p.m. and will be live streamed by FloTrack. To access live and on-demand coverage of the races, visit FloTrack.com to become a monthly or annual PRO subscriber.
