Plymouth State fourth in LEC Commissioner’s Cup standings

Panthers post highest finish in 17 years

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Little East Conference (LEC) announced the final standings for the 2019-20 LEC Commissioner's Cup and Plymouth State University had its best finish in 17 years.

The Panthers placed fourth in the final standings with 5.71 points, trailing Eastern Connecticut (6.59), WestConn (5.90) and Keene State (5.82). The award honors overall institutional athletic performance among the league's nine primary member institutions in the conference's championship sports. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year's points were based on fall and winter sports only.

For sports in which the LEC conducts in-season play (baseball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball), points are determined by the ranked order of finish in the regular season standings. For sports that do not conduct in-season play (cross country, swimming & diving and track & field), points are awarded based on the order of finish at the LEC championship meet.

PSU has improved its final standings by both points and ranking in each of the last five years. Its best finish came in the 2002-03 academic year when Plymouth State ranked second with a score of 6.327.

A number of programs had strong seasons to help bolster Plymouth State's standings. Women's volleyball finished in a three-way tie atop the LEC to claim its fourth regular season title and advanced to the championship match of the LEC Tournament. Men's basketball put together its best season in over a decade to finish tied for third place in the regular season standings and topped rival Keene State in a dramatic first round playoff game. Women's indoor track & field had a program-best performance at the championship meet to place third. Men's cross country matched its best-ever finish after a third place showing at the championship meet. Women's swimming and diving also took third at its championship meet to mark its best performance in 11 years, while men's indoor track & field, women's cross country and women's tennis also posted top-three finishes among the conference's full members.
