PSU Ski Teams compete in slalom at Middlebury Carnival

Kuus finishes third; Panther men earn fourth place team finish 

            HANCOCK, Vt. – Junior Karl Kuus (Toronto, Ont.) earned his first podium of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival season with a third place finish to lead the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams in the slalom at the Middlebury College Carnival at Middlebury Snow Bowl on Friday.

            Kuus sat in second after blazing down the course on his first run, then posted the sixth fastest time in run two to take third. Freshman Hunter Watson (Ottawa, Ont.) and sophomore Cooper Yates (Richmond, B.C.) also posted top-20 finishes as the Panther men finished fourth as a team.

            Freshman Rachel Smith (Stowe, Vt.) was the lone women to complete both runs for PSU.


            The Basics:

            Middlebury Carnival (Men's SL) – 4th of 13 Teams

            Middlebury Carnival (Women's SL) – 13th of 13 Teams


            Team Champions (Men):

            * Dartmouth picked up the team win with 115 points, holding off the University of Vermont (111). Host Middlebury College took third with 96 points.

            * Plymouth State just missed a top-three team finish after totaling 94 points.


            Team Champions (Women):

            * The Big Green swept the day as the women's team grabbed the top spot with 119 points. Middlebury (114) took second, with the University of New Hampshire (89) rounding out the top three.

            * Smith scored the Panthers' six points for a 13th place team finish.


            How it Happened (Men):

            * Kuus put together a pair of great runs for a 1:38.63 combined time, just 0.67 seconds behind the champion.

            * Yates sat in 16th after his initial run of 49.90, with Watson in 20th with a 50.05. Watson threw down a 50.40 second run to leapfrog Yates with a combined 1:40.45 for 17th overall.

            * Yates posted a 50.83 in his second run for a combined 1:40.73 to finish 20th.

            * Freshman Trevor Maxwell (West Linn, Ore.) finished 35th with a combined 1:42.51, while junior Logan Martin (Edwards, Colo.) ended up 53rd with a time of 1:46.81.


            How it Happened (Men):

            * Smith was in 58th after an opening run of 1:00.91, but moved up to 47th with a strong second run (56.14) for a combined 1:57.05.

            * Junior Rachel Kosik (Goodrich, Mich.) posted a 1:01.79 in her first run to sit in 62nd, one spot ahead of sophomore Gigi Quimby (Dunstable, Mass.), but neither was able to complete a second run.

            * Junior Ashley Houser (Ramsey, N.J.) also raced for the Panthers, but did not finish.


            Up Next:

            * Plymouth State returns on Saturday (Feb. 16) for the GS races, before stopping at the Dartmouth Skiway on Sunday (Feb. 17) to make-up last week's postponed GS race.
