DANBURY, Conn. - Cassie Barbaresi (Bridgeport,
Conn.) scored two goals and assisted on another Sunday afternoon to
lead the 20th-ranked Western Connecticut State University women's
soccer team to a 7-0 victory over Plymouth State University at the
Westside Athletic Complex.
Barbaresi's second goal, in the first minute of the second half,
put an exclamation mark on a game that saw the Colonials dominate
the first half by a 5-0 score.
Also scoring two goals for the Colonials was the team's leading
scorer, Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, Conn.), who scored her
seventh and eighth goals of the season in the game's opening
minutes. Rounding out the scoring for the Colonial's were Victoria
Capozziello (Fairfield, Conn.), and Megan Staropoli (Blauvelt,
N.Y.), with one goal each.
In goal for Plymouth State, senior Ashley Riberdy
(Manchester, N.H.), faced 28 shots on goal and registered 21 saves.
WestConn's final goal of the game was credited as an own goal when
a crossing pass from Molly Desjarlais (North Windham, Conn.)
caromed of a Plymouth State defender in the 63rd minute.
WestConn keeper Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, Conn.) made two saves
in goal before yielding to Shannon Cawley (Williamantic, Conn/),
for the final 30 minutes. Cawley had one save to preserve the shut
out.
The Colonials improve their overall record to 9-1-1, and remain
undefeated in the LEC at 4-0. The Panthers fall to 4-5
overall and 1-3 in the LEC on the season.
The Colonials travel to Worcester State for a non-league match this
Wednesday (7 p.m.), while PSU returns to action Tuesday in a
non-conference match-up at Middlebury (4:00 p.m.)
