FARMINGTON, Maine - Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale,
Maine) tallied 26 points with nine rebounds Thursday night to help
the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team end a
five-game losing skid with an 80-70 victory over Plymouth State
University at Dearborn Gymnasium.
A tight game throughout, Farmington led 43-40 at halftime, but
Plymouth State built a 57-50 advantage with 10:20 left in the
contest. The Beavers awoke to put together a 13-0 run over the next
2:30 -- highlighted by 3-pointers from freshmen Jillian Ross
(Belfast, Maine) and Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maine) -- to storm
back to a 63-57 lead with 7:27 remaining.
The Panthers knocked the lead down to two points before a 12-0
stretch from the Beavers for a 75-61 command with 2:27 left in the
game. Plymouth State closed to within seven points with 1:21 left,
but the Beavers held on for the 80-70 win.
Following Laflin, Amanda Byrne (Winslow, Maine) tallied 13 points
with three 3-pointers in the win with Erin Porter (Bangor, Maine)
adding 11 points.
Senior Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H.) and
sophomore Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) each
posted a double-double for PSU, with Daniels scoring 15 points and
snagging 14 boards and Kent notching 10 points and a like number of
rebounds. Freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester,
N.H./West) added 12 points for the visitors, while sophomore
Karly Gray (Southampton, Mass.) and junior
Kayla Morin (Pascoag, R.I.) also got into
double-digit scoring with 10 points apiece.
The Beavers improved to 4-7 and are scheduled to host North
Atlantic Conference foe Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday (3:00
p.m.). The Panthers slipped to 5-6 and are slated to host Little
East Conference opponent Rhode Island College Saturday at Foley
Gymnasium (1:00 p.m.)
