BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Caroline Ashe (West
Roxbury, Mass.) netted a career-high 19 points Tuesday evening to
lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team
over visiting Plymouth State University, 72-58, in a Little East
Conference contest at the Clark Athletic Center.
Sophomore Karly Gray (Southampton, Mass.) led the
Panthers with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Joy DePalo (Enfield, N.H.) came off the
bench to score 10 points and sophomore Laura Kent
(Bellingham, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points.
Plymouth State owned a 17-10 first-half advantage before UMass
Boston went on a 9-2 run to knot the score at 19-19 with 9:14
showing. The Beacons closed out the half on a 26-5 run,
fueled by seven points from Ashe, including a three-pointer with
eight seconds left, and give the home team a 45-26 halftime
advantage.
UMass Boston owned its largest lead at 50-30 with 15:52 to play in
the second half, but Plymouth State shot back with 11 unanswered
points to cut the deficit to 50-41 with 12:11 to go. The
Panthers got to within nine points (54-45) with 7:24 showing, but
the Beacons reeled off seven straight to give them a 61-45 lead
with 5:55 remaining. PSU came no closer than 10 points the
rest of the way.
Ashe added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for UMass
Boston, while senior Ashley Greene (Brookline, Mass.) finished with
14 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Senior guard
Myrna Tangar (Randolph, Mass.) just missed a double-double with 12
points and nine boards and freshman forward Cammy Brown (Malden,
Mass.) came off the bench to contribute with 10 points.
The
Beacons, 6-6 overall and 1-3 in LEC play, will be back in action
Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Bridgewater State
College, while Plymouth State, 6-7 and 1-3, hosts University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a Little East
Conference match-up.
