PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Lauren
Matthews (Monroe, Conn.) scored a goal and assisted on
another Saturday afternoon to lead Western Connecticut State
University to a 6-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a
Little East Conference women's soccer match at Panther Field.
Junior Nicole Sieber (Newtown, Conn.) added a goal for the
Colonials, who won their third straight game to improve to 7-3
overall. WestConn, the two-time defending LEC champions, also
moved to 3-0 in conference play, while PSU slipped to 3-5-3 overall
and 0-3-1 in the Little East.
Junior Gianna Minervini (Point Pleasant, N.J.)
provided the highlight for the Panthers, scoring her second goal of
the season with about five minutes remaining in the game on a nice
long shot over the goalies reach.
Junior Kelli Veras (Trumbull, Conn.) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead
midway through the opening frame, finishing off a nice service from
Matthews. Senior Victoria Capozziello (Fairfield, Conn.) put
another one on the board for Western just before the break to make
it a 2-0 game.
The Colonials pulled away in the second half. Sieber and Matthews
each scored in the first 15 minutes to push the margin to 4-0,
Matthews knocking in her team-leading eighth of the season.
Sophomore Jennifer Duran (Uncasville, Conn.) and freshman Lauren
Francisco (Ludlow, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the winners.
PSU is back in action on Wednesday with a non-conference match at
Castleton (4:00 p.m.), while WestConn plays a pivotal LEC make-up
contest on Monday at Eastern Connecticut (3:30 p.m.). Eastern
and Western are the only two schools that remain unbeaten in LEC
action.
