BOSTON, Mass. -
Junior Kristi Morales (San Francisco, Calif.) netted the only goal
of the afternoon and sophomore keeper Ashley McRoberts (Merrimack,
N.H.) stopped all 11 shots on net Saturday to give the University
of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over
visiting Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference
match at the Clark Athletic Center Field.
Saturday's win sets a school-record for victories in a season for
UMass Boston, as the Beacons wrap up the regular season at 7-10-2
overall and 3-3-1 in LEC play, finishing in fourth place. The
Panthers fall to 5-8-4 and 1-5-1 and end up in a tie for sixth.
UMB will host Bay State rival UMass Dartmouth in a Little East
Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday, the Beacons' first-ever playoff
contest, while PSU wins the tiebreaker over Rhode Island College
and will travel to third-seeded Keene State for a 6:00 p.m. start.
Freshman Julienne McCuish (Mashpee, Mass.) crossed to Morales, who
unleashed a shot from the top of the 18-yard maker that sailed over
the keeper and into the back of the net for her eighth goal of the
season for UMass Boston at 18:01 of the first half. That
stood as the only goal of the contest.
McRoberts registered her second shutout of the campaign for the
Beacons, while freshman goalie Angelina LaBroad
(Hampton, N.H.) made five saves for Plymouth State. The
Panthers owned a 17-12 shot advantage on the afternoon.
PSU will get another shot at Keene State in Tuesday's playoff
game. The Panthers dropped a 4-0 decision to the Owls on
Sept. 27 in Keene.
