PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Western Connecticut State
University jumped out to a double-digit lead less than seven
minutes into the game Saturday afternoon and went on to post a
76-53 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East
Conference women's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.
WestConn shot a blistering 66.7 percent in a 44-point first half,
and connected on 61 percent for the game, improving its season
record to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in LEC play. It was nearly the
opposite for the home team, as the Panthers converted just 31.8
percent in the first half and a frigid 28.8 percent for the game,
falling to 6-3 overall this season and 0-2 in LEC games.
Senior Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) led the way for the
Colonials with 13 points, while classmate Alyssa McGhee (Hartford,
Conn.) was perfect on the day with 12 points on 3-for-3 shooting
from both three-point range and the free throw line.
Sophomore Karli Spera (Waterford, Conn.) chipped in with 11 points
for the winners, and three others scored nine points apiece -
sophomore Heather Lee (Seymour, Conn.), senior Jennifer Kancler
(Columbia, Conn.) and junior Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.)
Sophomore Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West)
ended up as PSU's leading scorer with 11 points despite making just
3-of-13 shots. Junior Katie
Sunderland (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in with 10
points.
The Colonials took an 11-2 lead in the first four minutes of the
game, and extended the margin to 14 points (27-13) by the midway
point of the opening frame. WestConn went up by 21 points
(34-13) at the seven-minute mark and owned a 22-point margin
(44-22) at the break.
Plymouth State whittled the deficit down to 14 points three times
early in the second half, the last time at 50-36 with 13 minutes
remaining, but WestConn responded with nine straight points to get
the lead back up over 20 points and put the game away.
After a break for final exams and the holidays, PSU is back on the
court on Saturday, Jan. 3, with a non-conference home game against
Johnson & Wales University (1:00 p.m.). WestConn hosts
Wentworth in a non-conference tilt on Monday, Jan. 5, at 5:30
p.m.
