PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - It was not a good day for the
Plymouth State University men's soccer team as the Panthers were
defeated, 5-0, by host Plattsburgh State in the Cardinal Kick-Off
Classic.
Plattsburgh won its own tournament with a 2-0 record, as the
Cardinals knocked off Green Mountain College 8-0 on Saturday.
Plymouth State and Potsdam State both ended up with 1-1 records on
the weekend; Plymouth finished runner-up in the tourney, with its
3-2 victory over Potsdam on Saturday becoming the difference after
Potsdam defeated Green Mountain on Sunday, 6-1.
Two Panthers earned recognition by being named to the
All-Tournament Team -- seniors Semir Mehmedovic
(Concord, N.H./Franklin) and Gareth Stephens
(Yeovil, England).
Plattsburgh was credited with an own goal after Plymouth State
knocked the ball into its own net midway through the opening
half. Tournament Most Valuable Player Pat Shaughnessy scored
his fourth goal of the season for Plattsburgh on a penalty shot
with 11 minutes to go in the half to put the Cardinals up 2-0 at
the break.
Ryan Ormsby scored his first two goals of the season in the second
half as the Cardinals blew the game open. His two strikes were
sandwiched around the fourth of the season by C.J. Taylor.
PSU managed only two shots on goal, both in the second half.
Plattsburgh had 18 shots, with Panther senior goalkeeper
Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H./Concord) making six
saves.
The Panthers, 1-1, returns home to enjoy a three-game home stand at
Panther Field. The home opener is Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
against Salem
State.
