DANBURY, Conn. - The Western
Connecticut State University women's basketball team held the
visitors from Plymouth State University scoreless for the first
five minutes of the second half Saturday afternoon and cruised to a
75-49 Little East Conference victory at Feldman Arena.
The Colonials earn the season sweep over the Panthers.
WestConn maintained a share of first place in the Little East at
8-1 in conference play, 16-3 overall, while PSU suffered its fourth
loss in a row and dipped to 3-6 in the LEC, 12-7 overall.
Sophomore Karli Spera (Waterford, Conn.) led the winners with 13
points, while senior Alyssa McGhee (Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore
Melissa Teel (Hamden, Conn.) added 11 and 10 points,
respectively. Teel also had eight rebounds and seven blocked
shots.
Senior Kayla Morin (Pascoag, R.I.) scored a
team-high 12 points for PSU. Freshman Alicia
Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) added 11 markers and
grabbed seven rebounds while Amanda Kania
(Manchester, N.H./West) contributed 10 points.
After a tightly contested first half, WestConn built on its
eight-point lead at intermission when it scored the half's first
seven points and went out in front, 41-26. The Panthers drew
within eight points, 44-36, with 11:09 remaining, but could not get
any closer as WestConn scored 15 of the game's next 16 points to
built its bulge to 23 points, 60-37.
PSU returns home to host Lyndon State College Thursday in the
annual Spirit Night game at Foley Gymnasium (5:30 p.m.) The
Colonials' next game will be Saturday when they travel to UMass
Boston (1:00 p.m.)
