PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Laura
Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) and sophomore Amanda
Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) combined for 46 points and
20 rebounds Thursday night as Plymouth State University defeated
the University of Maine Farmington in overtime, 80-72, in a
non-conference women's basketball contest at Foley Gymnasium.
Kania scored a career-high 25 points and collected a season-high 13
rebounds to post her second double-double of the season, while Kent
put up her second straight 21-point performance, scoring nine
points from the free throw line. Senior Kayla
Morin (Pascoag, R.I.) chipped in with 13 points as the
Panthers won their second straight to improve to 8-3 overall.
The Beavers got a combined 39 points, including five
three-pointers, from junior Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, Maine) and
sophomore Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maine). Laflin scored a
team-high 20 points while Busque added 19, including three baskets
from three-point range. UMF dropped its fifth straight and
slid to 3-8.
The visitors led by singles digits most of the first half, and
extended the advantage to 10 points (34-24) with two minutes
remaining. PSU came back to cut the margin to six points at
the break, 36-30.
PSU outscored the Beavers 10-4 to open the second half and knot the
score at 40-40. It stayed a one-possession game the next six
minutes before the Panthers started pulling away. PSU had a
seven-point lead with seven minutes remaining, but UMF hung tough
and came back to tie the game for the 10th time, 65-65, with just
under three minutes to play.
The teams traded baskets, and UMF had two chances at a potential
game-winning shot in the closing seconds, but the game went to
overtime tied at 67-all.
UMF went ahead by three points, 72-69, with three minutes left in
the overtime session but didn't score again as the Panthers rattled
off 11 unanswered points to end the game. Kent had six points
in the run to lead the way for the winners.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday with a
visit to Rhode Island College for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off. UMF
returns to the court on Tuesday at Maine Maritime (5:30 p.m.)
