PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Lauren
Lavery (Nashua, N.H.) scored her second goal of the game
to tie the score with nine minutes remaining in regulation
Wednesday afternoon, and Plymouth State University and Castleton
State College went on to a 3-3 overtime draw in non-conference
women's soccer action at chilly Panther Field.
Lavery's two goals helped PSU offset an outstanding performance by
Castleton junior Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, Vt.), who
scored all three Spartan goals, including two in the second half to
pull her team from behind. Castleton in now 7-0-1 in its last
eight games and 7-5-2 overall, while PSU stopped a three-game
losing streak and is now 5-5-2 overall.
Plymouth State was wearing pink uniforms in the game to promote
Breast Cancer Awareness.
Lavery put the home team ahead early, firing a loose ball into the
net from close range just three minutes into the contest. It
stayed that way for the next 40 minutes until Chadburn evened the
match with her first goal of the game with four minutes left in the
half, as her long shot from the right side snuck past a screened
PSU goalkeeper.
The Panthers regained the lead early in the second half when junior
Rebecca Wilson (Clinton, Conn.) scored her eighth
goal of the season, converting a crossing pass from freshman
Cassie Barnard (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West).
Trailing 2-1, Chadburn scored twice in less than three minutes
midway through the second half to give the Spartans the lead.
Her crossing pass in the 70th minute deflected off a Panther
defender and into the goal, and she took a feed from sophomore
Brynn Campbell (Clarendon, Vt.) in the middle to finish off her hat
trick less than three minutes later. Chadburn leads the Spartans
with 13 goals on the season.
The Castleton lead lasted nearly nine minutes until Lavery
collected a crossing pass from sophomore Sarah
Pandiscio (Simsbury, Conn.) and found the net for her
second of the game and team-leading ninth of the season,
deadlocking the score at 3-3. Neither team was able to score
the rest of the way, including two overtime sessions.
PSU finished with a 21-8 advantage in shots, including 7-0 in
overtime. Freshman Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) made seven
saves for the Spartans, and sophomore Stephanie
Regina (Howell, N.J.) finished with two saves for PSU.
Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Friday with
a 4:30 p.m. kick-off at Panther Field against UMass Dartmouth.
Castleton returns home to host Green Mountain College in a
North Atlantic Conference match Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
