DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State
University women's soccer team outshot Little East Conference rival
Plymouth State University 34-1 Saturday night, but the game's
outcome wasn't decided until sophomore Lauren
Francisco (Ludlow, Mass.) scored 1:08 into overtime to
give the Colonials a 2-1 victory at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The early minutes of the game gave every appearance of being an
offensive battle with both teams scoring early for a 1-1 tie.
WestConn got on the board first when senior Amanda Genova (New
Milford, Conn.) worked the ball down the left side of the field for
the Colonials and launched a long pass over the Plymouth State
defense. Lauren Francisco headed the pass just inside the
right post, past a diving Plymouth State goalie, to give WestConn a
1-0 lead. Plymouth State evened the score less than five
minutes later when senior Stacy DiSabato
(Manchester, N.H./Central) chipped the ball high over the head of
WestConn goalkeeper Molly Miller (Middlebury, Conn.) and into the
goal for her third of the season.
WestConn finished with a 17-0 advantage in shots in the second
half, but the score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes of play.
The overtime period was brief. WestConn quickly moved the
action into the Panther end of the field. Francisco worked
around one defender to move the ball into the box on the right
side. She was immediately challenged by another Plymouth
State defender, but found just enough room to blast a shot past the
Panther goalie and into the high right corner of the goal for the
game-winner.
WestConn held a 34-1 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in corner
kicks. Sophomore Angelina LaBroad (Hampton,
N.H.) made 10 saves in goal for Plymouth State, while Molly Miller
earns the win for WestConn without being called upon to make any
saves.
WestConn's season record now stands at 5-6, and 2-1 in the Little
East. PSU falls to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2 in the LEC. The
Colonials return to action Thursday at Worcester State (7:00 p.m.)
while PSU returns home to host Salem State Tuesday at 4:30
p.m.
