PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Karly Henderson (Salem,
Mass.) scored two goals Tuesday afternoon to lead Salem State
College to a 5-2 victory over Plymouth State University in a
non-conference women's soccer match at Panther Field.
It was a 1-1 game late in the first half but the visitors scored
just before the break to make it 2-1 and then rattled off three
unanswered goals in the second half to put the game away. The
Vikings get back on the winning track and improve to 7-4, while PSU
dropped its second in a row and fell to 5-4-1.
The Vikings got on the board just six minutes into the contest when
junior Taylor Orlando (Danvers, Mass.) chipped a ball over the
keeper's head and into the goal for an early lead. The game
stayed 1-1 for the next 30 minutes until PSU tied the score with
six minutes remaining in the half. Senior Lauren
Lavery (Nashua, N.H.) sent a corner kick into the box and
senior Ariana Hunt (Pierre, S.D.) headed it into
the goal for her first of the season.
Salem State needed less than two minutes to regain the lead as
Henderson scored her first of the game with 4:34 left on the
first-half clock, giving the Vikings a 2-1 margin at the break.
The Vikings pulled away in the second half. Junior Erin
O'Brien (Hanson, Mass.) made it 3-1 less than three minutes in, and
Henderson intercepted an errant Panther clearing pass in the 60th
minute and followed with her second goal of the game and
team-leading seventh of the season. Senior Jessica Baird
(Worcester, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Vikings when she
picked up a loose ball off a Viking corner kick and knocked home
her first of the season.
PSU got one last goal with eight minutes remaining when senior
Stacy DiSabato (Manchester, N.H.) headed home a
nice cross from Lavery, who recorded her second assist in the game.
Salem State finished with a13-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 margin
in corner kicks.
Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Saturday
with a 1:00 p.m. kick-off at Rhode Island College. Salem
State returns home to host Framingham State in a MASCAC match
Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
