PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Amanda
Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) scored 14 points on 7-of-9
shooting Thursday night to lead Plymouth State University to an
80-60 victory over Lyndon State College in non-conference women's
basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.
PSU, which swept the season series with the Hornets, put a halt to
a four-game losing streak and improved to 13-7 on the season.
Lyndon State drops to 7-10 overall.
Senior Kayla Morin (Pascoag, R.I.) added 13 points
to the Panther cause, while senior Kalie Judd
(Peabody, Mass.) contributed 10 points, six assists and five
steals. Senior Sam Naas (South Hero, Vt.)
added nine points off the Panther bench.
Seniors Sara Fetterhoff (Jay, Maine) and Jackie Wetzel (Braintree,
Mass.) combined for 40 points to lead the Hornets, Fetterhoff with
22 points and Wetzel with 18. They were the only two Hornets
to reach double figures in scoring.
Plymouth State jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on the strength of
the inside play of junior Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) and
Kania. PSU extended the advantage to 21-2, as it took five
minutes for Lyndon State to convert its first field goal of the
contest, suffering a frigid 0-for-9 from the floor during that
stretch.
The Hornets put together a 10-2 run midway through the first
session and got to within 11 points, 23-12. PSU went back to work
and built its lead back to 19 points, 33-14, with seven minutes
left in the half, and maintained a 45-27 margin at the break.
Two quick lay-ups, one by Fetterhoff and the other by Elizabeth
Hall (Newport, N.H.), to start the second half closed the gap to
45-31, but it was all PSU the rest of the way. Eleven of the 12
Panthers who saw action got into the scoring column.
Lyndon State out-rebounded the Panthers 42-40 but committed 26
turnovers.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday when they host Little
East Conference rival Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.). Lyndon
State returns home to host Castleton State on Saturday (4:00
p.m.)
