NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer College
women's soccer team edged Plymouth State University, 1-0, Wednesday
afternoon on freshman Emily Brown's (Rye, N.H.) first collegiate
goal in the 60th minute.
The Chargers earned their second victory over the Panthers
all-time in a series dating back to 1980. The win improves
Colby-Sawyer's record to 4-1-1, while Plymouth State drops their
first contest of the season and falls to 2-1-1.
The first half featured minimal chances from either side as both
teams jockeyed for field position. Around the 30 minute mark, the
Chargers began to turn up the pressure in the offensive end.
Freshman Ashley Reis (Peterborough, N.H.) had two chances within a
two-minute span to give Colby-Sawyer a lead but Plymouth State
sophomore goalie Angelina LaBroad (Hampton, N.H.)
was up to the task and kept the game scoreless heading into
halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Brown had her first chance to
record a goal when she sent a bending ball towards the net from the
left flank over the keepers head. Unfortunately, it was just a bit
high and hit off the crossbar. Brown found redemption when a
through ball from sophomore Liz Allen (Holden, Mass.) set her up
for the game-winner.
Plymouth State's best chance came with under three minutes to play
when a cross was sent in towards the top of the box. Senior
Lauren Lavery (Nashua, N.H.) volleyed the ball and
fired a strike that was just a bit high.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore keeper Allie Piper (Barre, Vt.) pushed her
shutout streak to three games and made two saves in the victory.
LaBroad made six saves suffering her first loss of the
season.
The Chargers will wrap up a four-match home stand on Saturday when
they resume TCCC play with a 3:00 pm contest against New England
College. Plymouth State begins a three-match home stand on Saturday
in the Little East Conference opener against rival Keene State
(4:30 p.m.)
