MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Middlebury College got back on
track Wednesday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Plymouth State
University in non-conference men's soccer action.
Junior Carson Cornbrooks (Williston, Vt.) opened the scoring just
1:32 into the game as he one-touched a great crossing pass on the
right side from senior Colin Nangle (Westport, Conn.). Cornbrooks
struck again with his third of the season at 17:46, giving
Middlebury a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Ethan Galiette (Avon, Conn.)
made a similar crossing pass, as Cornbrooks received the ball on
the left side and slid a shot past Plymouth State keeper Bjorn
Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden).
Middlebury threatened again in the 39th minute, but
Ohlsson got a piece of a Jake Edwards (Easton, Conn.) shot, before
it hit the crossbar. Plymouth State's best chance of the half came
shortly after, as freshman Aly El Tambouly (Cairo,
Egypt) let a shot go that was denied by a one-handed diving save by
Tim Cahill (Glastonbury, Conn.)
The home team had a golden opportunity just 23 seconds into the
second half, but a penalty shot by senior Nolan Lincoln (East
Thetford, Vt.) was saved to his left by a diving Ohlsson. Just
seconds after coming off the bench in the 68th minute,
senior Stephen Hart (Park City, Utah) sent sophomore Tyler Macnee
(Williston, Vt.) in all alone as he notched his second goal of the
season to make it a 3-0 game.
Plymouth State had another scoring chance in the 71st
minute as senior Semir Mehmedovic (Zvornik,
Bosnia/Franklin, N.H.) gained some breathing room in a one-on-one
situation breaking to the goal. He quickly fired a shot to the
short side, but Cahill was there to deny him with a diving stop.
Middlebury had a breakaway of its own in the 83rd
minute, but junior Taylor Wilkins (South Burlington, Vt.) was
stopped by Ohlsson, who finished the game with eight saves. Cahill
made five stops for the Panthers to earn his third shutout of the
season.
Middlebury, 3-2-1, will host Colby College this Saturday in a 1:00
p.m. game, while PSU (5-4) will host Western Connecticut State
University on Saturday in a Little East Conference affair at 1:00
p.m.
