PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University
women's soccer team out-shot New England College 25-3 Saturday
afternoon, but had to settle for a 1-1 overtime tie in the season
opener at Panther Field.
It was the second straight year that PSU went to extra time in the
season opener. The Panthers downed Green Mountain College,
1-0, last season in overtime.
Senior Lauren Lavery (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South),
who scored the OT game-winner a year ago, tallied the only goal for
PSU on a penalty kick just seven minutes into the contest. It
stayed 1-0 through the remainder of the first half, with PSU
out-shooting the visitors 12-1.
PSU maintained an advantage in the second half, out-shooting NEC
9-2, but the Pilgrims notched the only goal. Sophomore Amy
Ordile (Winchendon, Mass.) fired one into the top right corner at
the 67-minute mark to deadlock the game at 1-1.
The Panthers managed two shots in each of the two overtime
sessions, but neither team was able to crack the goal and the game
ended in a tie.
Senior Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) finished with seven saves in
the Pilgrims goal, and sophomore Angelina LaBroad
(Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) needed to make just one stop for PSU.
PSU plays its next three games on the road, beginning Wednesday at
Simmons College (7 p.m.) NEC (0-1-1) returns home to host
Emmanuel College on Sunday in its home opener (1:00 p.m.)
