BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Alicia
Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) scored 18 points and
added nine rebounds Tuesday evening to lead the Plymouth State
University women's basketball team over host University of
Massachusetts Boston, 60-41, in a Little East Conference contest at
the Clark Athletic Center.
Senior Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) added 15
points and eight boards and classmate Gretchen
Fritch (South Boston, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points as
the Panthers improve to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in Little East
play. Freshman Kate Levy (Falmouth, Mass.) scored 15 points
to lead the Beacons, who fell to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the LEC.
Plymouth State had just a four-point advantage (22-18) with four
minutes to play in the first half but scored the last nine points
to take a 31-18 lead at the intermission. PSU pushed the
margin to 16 points early in the second half when the Beacons came
alive with a 12-4 run, fueled by a pair of three-pointers from
Levy, to cut the deficit to 43-35 with 12 minutes to play in the
game. UMass Boston stayed within 48-39 with 5:15 showing on
the second half clock, but Plymouth State closed out the game on a
12-2 burst to cruise to the victory.
Defense was the theme of the night with Plymouth State holding
UMass Boston under 30 percent (16-54) shooting from the floor and
the Beacons allowing just a 37 percent (23-62) shooting night from
the Panthers. Plymouth State also forced 20 turnovers and
outscored UMass Boston, 21-7, in points off turnovers.
Both teams play non-conference games on Thursday, Plymouth State
returning home to host Johnson State at Foley Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.)
and UMass Boston traveling to Bridgewater State College for a 5:30
p.m. tilt.
